Understanding Roofing & Waterproofing for Long-Term Home Protection

When it comes to safeguarding your home, two essential components often go unnoticed, but play a vital role in ensuring its longevity and structural integrity - quality roofing solutions and effective waterproofing. When a roof doesn't have proper waterproofing, it can lead to problems such as mold growth in small cracks and crevices, structural damage, electrical problems etc

Proper roofing and waterproofing systems are your home's first line of defense against the elements, as they prevent moisture from infiltrating your home and causing damage. Effective waterproofing is essential not just for roofs but also for foundations and basements, as it prevents moisture from seeping into your home, which can lead to detrimental issues like mold growth, structural damage, and even electrical hazards.

Now, how can you mitigate this?

For Roofs:

Step 1: Filling up existing cracks and crevices. The method varies for new and old roofs, but worry not, we’ve got you covered!

  • For Old Roofs: For old roofs, we recommend using epoxy-based sealers, such as epoxy grout, as it fills cracks and holes, creating a solid, impermeable barrier that prevents water infiltration and further structural damage. Its ability to bond with various materials and resist harsh environmental conditions makes it a reliable choice for extending the lifespan of older roofs.
  • For New Roofs: For new roofs, we recommend using water-based acrylic sealers, because they form a protective layer that shields the surface from water damage and environmental elements. They're easy to apply, dry quickly, and are less toxic than other sealants. Additionally, they help prevent mold and mildew growth, ensuring the longevity and integrity of the new roof from the start.

Step 2: Layering the waterproofing material

  • After the epoxy/acrylic layer is done, the next layer is using a waterproofing membrane, such as a PVC sheet membrane. They are excellent for handling weather-related issues, and some are even fire retardant.
  • A high-quality polymeric PVC membrane is suitable for new and remedial applications and offers high tear and puncture resistance.

Step 3: The final layer

  • To protect your roof membrane and ensure a proper seal, apply a waterproof sealant evenly across the entire surface.
  • Once this dries, you’re done! Your house is waterproof for years to come!

For foundations:

Step 1: Identify cracks and gaps, and clean them from debris.

Step 2: Once it is clean, fill them with a patching compound or hydraulic cement.

Step 3: Similar to the roof, apply an exterior membrane coating, and ensure that it extends above the ground level, to prevent water seepage.

Step 4 (Optional): In addition to exterior waterproofing, it's essential to manage water effectively around your foundation. You can achieve this by installing a drainage system that redirects water away from your house. Interior waterproofing coatings or paints can also be applied inside the basement to provide an extra layer of protection against moisture.

The importance of effective waterproofing extends beyond just the roof. It is equally crucial for safeguarding the foundations and basements of your home.

In the grand scheme of home maintenance, the roof and foundation of your house stand as guardians, shielding it from the relentless forces of nature. The roof is the first line of defense, and a well-maintained roof and waterproofing system keeps the home insulated against weather extremes, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling.
